Young Person/Teen Therapy – Support for Adolescents and Their Parents

Counselling for Teens in Worcester | With Sarah MacFarlane

Teenage years can be overwhelming—for both teens and their parents.

With so many changes happening emotionally, socially, and physically, it’s not unusual for teens to feel anxious, low in confidence, misunderstood, or simply stuck. As a qualified integrative counsellor experienced in working with both adolescents and families, I offer a safe, confidential space for teens to talk, process emotions, and build the tools they need to thrive.

How I Help Teens in Therapy

Every teen is different, so therapy is always adapted to the individual. I draw on a range of approaches—CBT, BWRT, EMDR, and solution-focused therapy—to support teens with issues such as:

  • Anxiety, panic attacks, and stress

  • Low self-esteem and body image concerns

  • Depression and mood swings

  • Peer pressure, bullying, or social anxiety

  • Family breakdown or parental separation

  • Grief and loss

  • Health anxiety or obsessive thoughts

  • Perfectionism and academic pressure

Therapy can help teens make sense of difficult thoughts and feelings, find better coping strategies, and develop a more secure sense of self.

What Does Therapy for Teens Look Like?

Sessions are designed to feel relaxed, friendly, and collaborative—never clinical or overwhelming. For younger teens, I may include creative or visual tools (like drawing or imagery work). For older teens, the sessions often feel more like open conversation with structure and support woven in.

What to expect:

  • A safe and confidential space to talk

  • Tools to manage overwhelming emotions or thoughts

  • A sense of being heard without judgement

  • Coping strategies that actually work in real life

  • A pace that suits your teen’s comfort and readiness

Sessions are completely confidential unless there’s a safeguarding concern, and I always balance the need for privacy with keeping parents appropriately informed and supported.

Information for Parents

As a parent, it can be tough watching your child struggle and not knowing how to help.

Many parents worry they’re doing something wrong or are unsure if therapy is the right step. If you're unsure, I offer a free initial consultation to discuss what’s going on and whether this is the right support.

Depending on the age of your child and their wishes, I may also offer occasional parent check-ins to support the wider family system, without breaking the teen’s confidentiality.
